It is also known as “Macaw Waste’ disease because the symptoms include weight loss, vomiting, changes in the droppings like having lots of undigested seeds as well as swelling of the crop, a muscular compartment inside the body where the birds keep their food for softening before actually processing it in the gizzard. Seizures and tremors also occur. How this disease spreads is yet to be ascertained, but often the whole flock gets affected. There is unfortunately no treatment and the end result is losing the bird.
Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD): This is a disease that is common among one of the most popular birds, the parrots. Generally the young birds of less than 2 years of age get affected. But the adults can get affected too. It is generally identified by loss of feather or abnormal feather development, absence of the powder down and abnormality of the beak. There can also be lesions and growth on the beak. This is another viral disease which has no treatment and results in fatality.
